Alternator belt comes off Continental aircraft engine

1. Worn or incorrectly installed counterweight (pendulum absorber)  pins. These can be replaced without disassembling engine. Different diameter pins are used to tune the counterweights to different frequencies. Non-geared 6-cylinder counterweighted engines usually have at least two 6th order and 1 fifth or fourth order counterweight. If the pins are installed in the wrong position or the wrong pins are used then the counterweight doesn't absorb the correct engine vibration. Increased engine vibration causes the belt to dance on the pulley.

2. Incorrect belt tension. (See Service Bulletin M89-6).

3. Damaged pulley bearings.

4. Improper alignment of the sheaves. (See Service Bulletin M89-6).
