Fuel drips out of carburetor into airbox or ground in Lycoming or Continental Aircraft Engine

Aircraft Carburetor

Continental and Lycoming carbureted engines use "updraft" carburetors. With the carburetor mounted below the engine the flow of intake air carries the fuel up into the engine. When the engine stops pumping then any fuel that has condensed on the intake tubes can flow down into the air box.

1. Over-prime or leaking primer system.

2. Fuel level in carburetor too high. Can be caused by a composite float in Marvel Schebler carburetors absorbing fuel and becoming heavy. Change to metal float.

3. Auto fuel - switch to avgas and see of problem goes away.

4. Accelerator pump base gasket leaking

5. Leaking needle & seat
