Exhaust bypass valve fails to close in Lycoming or Continental aircraft engine. Wastegate fails to close

An exhaust bypass valve normally stays open until oil pressure builds up in its hydraulic cylinder to actuate its closing. Failure to close must be traced to a hydraulic problem in building up oil pressure, or a mechanical problem in closing the valve.

1. Engine oil pressure too low.

2. Controller fails to close off the oil flow. Oil pressure cannot build up if a controller located between the actuator outlet and the engine crankcase fails to close off the oil flow.

3. Restriction in oil line from the exhaust bypass valve actuator to the controller.

4. Poppet-style - Poppet stuck closed.

5. External linkage from the actuator to the butterfly valve binding.

6. Butterfly bearings tight. Lubricate with Mouse Milk.

7. Controller located between the actuator outlet and the engine crankcase doesn't relieve oil pressure as its suppose too.
