Impulse coupling rivet failed

Bendix Magnetos Note: This style impulse coupling has been replaced with the snap-ring style impulse coupling per Continental/Bendix Service Bulletin 599D. The use of a snap ring allows for an increase in axle material hardness.

1. Rapid failure of the impulse coupling rivet can be caused by excessive engine torsional vibrations. Most common on Lycoming 540 series engines.

2. Mis-alignment of the magneto drive gear assembly. This can happen if the crankcase has been line-bored. Its probably not a bad idea to measure the distance between crankcase parting surfaces and the center of the magneto drive gear recess. Refer to Lycoming Service Instruction 1140 and Slick Service Bulletin SB1-98 or latest edition.
