Front main bearing failure in Lycoming or Continental aircraft engine

A bearing where the Babbitt has been wiped (displaced) is caused by a rupture of the oil film. This can be caused by: Too little clearance or by loss of oil to the bearing or Cold weather starts on thick oil can cause wiping of the front main bearing.
