Aircraft magneto not firing

For a magneto to "cut off completely" the primary current must not be interrupted; this may happen if the points aren't opening , the capacitor is shorting to ground, the "p" lead terminal end is not attached correctly to the back of the magneto, the "p" lead is grounded, the external noise filter is shorted internally to ground. 

For Slick magnetos make sure you haven't timed the magneto 180 degrees off by sticking the timing pin in the incorrect hole in the distributor cap.
