Glossary of Aircraft Hose Terms

  • Assembly length Hoses assembly length is measured from end of nipple to end of nipple, or flare to flare. This is the same as connection length (the distance between connections). Length is stated in inches and 1/8 inch. Example 0244 is 24 inches and 4/8 of an inch.
  • Blisters - A raised spot on the surface of the hose - usually containing air - sometimes referred to as voids or bubbles.
  • Blow Down Blow Down - a term used to define rapid decompression of a pneumatic hose. This can result in the collapse of the inner tube caused by entrapped air in the hose structure trying to return to the inside of the tube.
  • Carcass The fabric, cord and/or metal reinforcing section of the hose, as distinguished from the inner tube and cover.
  • Collapse a term used to indicate the closing of the inside diameter of the hose due to kinking, vacuum, or other form of abuse.
  • Effusion the flow of gas under pressure through a rubber layer
  • Installation Tip If you have a bundle of hoses that you must install and don't know where each hose is supposed to go then its best to start with the shortest hose and work your way to the longest. This way you won't end up with a hose that is too short.

Stratoflex hose spot welding id band Hose Identification bands are spot welded to prevent removal without destroying the band.

  • Wire Throw-Out In braided hose, a broken end or ends in the wire reinforcements protruding from the surface of the braid.
  • Length Changes Allow enough slack in the hose line to provide for changes in length when pressure is applied. The hose will change in length from -2% to -4%.
  • O.D... Outside diameter
  • Pin Pricked Cover hose whose cover has perforations to permit the effusion of gas to the atmosphere.
  • Proof pressure the pressure applied to a hose assembly to ensure proper installation of fittings. This pressure is usually twice the operating pressure of the hose. To qualify, the hose assembly must contain this pressure without leaking for a specified period of time.
  • Safety factor safety factor - the difference between minimum burst pressure and the maximum operating pressure - usually four to one.
  • Compound twist angle When both fittings on a hose are angled fittings and the fittings go off in different directions, the angular relationship between fittings is termed the compound twist angle.

Twist angle is determined by the number of degrees between the fittings.
For compound twist angles, hold the hose upright with the lower fitting on the center of this page and the upper fitting facing you. The direction of the lower fitting faces is the compound angle of the hose.
