Aircraft Maintenance TroubleShoot > Aircraft Paint Stits Poly Fiber and Randolph

Orange peel

1. Viscosity of material being sprayed is too thick.
2. Spray gun not properly adjusted to deposit a wet, smooth coat.
3. Air temperature too high or spraying in the sun or on a hot surface which causes solvent "flash off" before the material has time to flow out to a smooth surface.
4. Overspray landing on a partially dried surface.
5. Spray gun tip, cap and needle not properly matched for the type of material being sprayed.
6. Volume of air available from the compressor not enough for rating of spray gun.
7. Spraying under windy or drafty conditions or under direct blasts from ventilating fan causing premature drying.
8. Incompatible reducer used and drying too fast.
9. Poly Fiber EP-420 is best applied in multiple thin coats, unlike automotive high build primers, it needs to go on lightly. If you put on too much, it can orange peel or leave craters.
