Turbocharger & Controller
Piper Lance with the TIO-540-S1AD
1. Manually controlled mechanical interconnect turbocharger
2. A mechanical interconnect between the exhaust waste gate valve and
carburetor butterfly which is operated by the pilot's throttle control.
The relationship of the wastegate position to butterfly position is such
that at ground level, the rated manifold pressure and power occur at less
than full throttle. This is done so that the throttle can be advanced by
the pilot during climb to maintain rated manifold pressure. A popoff relief
valve is installed between the turbocharger and carburetor to protect the
engine if manifold pressures exceeds the approved limit. During climb at
a fixed throttle condition manifold pressure will decrease at the rate
of approximately 1 inch for each thousand feet. Manifold pressure will
respond to leaning by increasing as mixture is leaned to Best Power, and
decrease when further leaned to Best Economy. Throttle movements should
be made slowly with this type of turbocharger installation.
